Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A. Welcomes New Attorneys and Professionals in Tax, Commercial Lending, Litigation, and Intellectual Property Teams

 MINNEAPOLIS — March 26, 2025. Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A. is pleased to welcome six new attorneys and professionals to the firm.

Jack M. Atterberry joins the firm as an Associate in our Commercial Lending Practice. Jack represents financial institutions in commercial, construction, and real estate lending transactions, secured and unsecured financing, syndicated loans, and other banking and finance matters. He received his J.D. from the University of Minesota Law School, his MBA from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management, and his B.A. from Carleton College.

Benjamin D. Gilchrist joins the firm as an Associate in our Business & Commercial Litigation practice. He represents clients across all industry types in matters of contractual and commercial litigation, including products liability litigation, construction litigation, insurance defense, and trusts & estates disputes. Ben received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of St. Thomas School of law, and his B.B.A. from the University of Minnesota – Duluth.

Candice G. Long joins the firm as a Specialty Tax Advisor in our Specialty Tax Credits & Incentives practice. Candice works with clients across a broad range of industries to optimize and substantiate their U.S. federal and state Research & Development (“R&D”) Tax Credits and federal Clean Energy Credits. Prior to joining the firm, she spent more than thirteen years across two Big 4 accounting firms. Candice received her Masters of Accountancy with a Specialization in Taxation and her B.B.A. from The University of Iowa. Candice is a Certified Public Accountant in Illinois and Colorado

Andrew K. Markland joins the firm as an Associate in our Commercial Lending Practice. Andrew represents a broad range of clients in commercial, construction, and real estate lending transactions, and mezzanine financing. He also has experience in loan sales, loan modification and restructuring transactions, and commercial property acquisitions and dispositions. Andrew received his J.D. from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, and his B.A. from North Dakota State University.

Sunčica Sejdinović joins the firm as an Associate in our Tax practice. Sunčica advises public and private companies of all sizes, including multi-national corporations, private equity funds, healthcare providers, and insurance companies, on the corporate and partnership tax implications of domestic and cross-border M&A transactions. Prior to joining the firm, she was a senior associate at a Big 4 accounting firm. Sunčica received her Master of Business Taxation from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management, her J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law, and her B.A. from Winona State University.

Kevin W. Weber joins the firm as Counsel in our Intellectual Property practice. Drawing upon his extensive in-house experience as Intellectual Property counsel for a Fortune 500 company, Kevin counsels clients on patents, trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks, as well as intellectual property issues relating to acquisitions, divestitures, new product introductions, licensing opportunities, infringement allegations, and litigation. Kevin received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Minesota Law School, and his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University.

Big Law Tax Counsel Duo Join Winthrop & Weinstine as Co-Chairs of National Tax Practice

Minneapolis, February 12, 2025 – Joel Peters-Fransen and Rafi W. Mottahedeh joined Minneapolis-based law firm Winthrop & Weinstine as shareholders and co-chairs of its tax practice. With their AmLaw100 law firm and in-house counsel experience, they will lead the strategic direction of the more than 20-lawyer practice, which serves clients in various tax specialties including M&A/transactional, capital markets, investment funds, specialty tax credits and incentives, and tax credit financing and syndication.

Together, they served as tax counsel at Minnesota-based conglomerate Cargill, the largest privately owned company in the United States, which operates in 170 countries. Joel was most recently an equity partner at Kirkland & Ellis and Rafi was previously a lawyer at Jenner & Block and later an equity partner and chair of the tax practice at Shartsis Friese.

In addition to managing the tax practice, Joel and Rafi will leverage their extensive experience in corporate, partnership, and international tax law to augment the firm’s service offerings in this area.
