My mom always told me that the best thing I could be is well-rounded. I took that to heart in law school by exploring every opportunity that came my way. I spent time as a law clerk with a public defender’s office, a district court judge, and the Office of Administrative Hearings, as a research assistant examining constitutional rights issues and impact litigation, and as a student attorney representing incarcerated Minnesotans in civil matters. As a summer associate at Winthrop, I realized how much those experiences impacted my style, work ethic, and perspective as an attorney and pushed me to think outside the box when faced with any issue.
My Approach
My favorite aspect of my work is the opportunity to be aspirational, rather than reactive, about the law. In working with clients, and helping them determine the best way to interact with the state on their business concerns, we also get to be creative – not only about what the law currently is, but what it could be. The clients and businesses that I get to work with are so passionate about their work and their industries; it is an honor to represent them and help pave a path forward.
Before attending law school, I worked in state-level politics in various roles for three years, and I bring that perspective to my representation of clients. To achieve anything productive in the regulatory and government world, it is key to bridge the differences between a variety of viewpoints and foster communication between people and groups that may not always see eye to eye. More than any other skills, either natural or learned, my core desire to listen to and learn from everyone I meet is what drives me. I believe in being curious and learning all sides of an issue to determine the most effective and innovative solution.
Outside of work, I love taking long walks with my yellow lab, spending sunny days on the lake, and tailgating every Gopher home football game. I wouldn’t call myself a true fan, because it doesn’t matter to me if they win or lose, but I love the spirit and atmosphere of the stadium. In general, I’m happiest if I can be outside with friends and people I love.
