Energy law attorney Eric Swanson will speak at a Hennepin County Bar Association CLE event on Wednesday, October 24, 2018. His session, “Eminent Domain and Energy Projects – The Lay of the Land in 2018,” discusses a “hot button” topic that has drawn significant public attention in the past few years.
Minnesota Statutes provide the right of eminent domain to “public service corporations,” including privately held companies building large energy projects, including transmission lines and pipelines. The statutes have changed over the years and different energy projects can fall under different statutes and rules and will likely continue to change. Nearly every legislative session sees proposals for new or amended laws brought forward. Eric brings a unique perspective to this issue, having represented a variety of interests over his career and in a variety of forums including at the legislature, before state and local units of government and in district court. He will trace the history of this issue, the current status of the law and the current trends – not just in Minnesota but more broadly across the country.
