It’s rewarding to take an old, falling-down building, and bring it back to life. I help clients with the complex work of taking something that is underutilized and turning it into an economic engine, for example, like we did with the Schmidt property – formerly a brewery, it sat empty for 10 years, and was a dead zone in the neighborhood that wasn’t safe to walk past. After working with my client for years, it is now the Schmidt Artist Lofts – with 250 people living, working, and going out in the neighborhood. I enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of creating something where there was nothing, in a way that helps my clients be successful. I work with them to get to the bottom line of their concerns and needs, and push through to make sure the deal gets done.
Outside of work, I coach my son’s basketball team, and attend all of my daughter’s swimming meets – and watch the Minnesota Vikings when I can.
I represent real estate owners, developers and tax credit investors on complex development and finance-related issues, including the use of tax-exempt bonds; tax increment financing; tax credits; city, county and other governmental subsidies; and acquisition and disposition of partnership interests. I have a focus on multifamily housing development and finance, including the development and financing of rental and for-sale housing, as well as commercial and mixed-use facilities and restructuring troubled low-income housing projects. In addition, I assist clients with formulating and operating common interest communities and assembling title encumbrances.

I have experience representing clients in all aspects of real estate development, from land acquisition and assembly, joint venture relationships, construction, and mezzanine and permanent financing matters, as well as the negotiation, documentation and monetization of subsidies such as tax increment financing and tax credits.
