Emily A. Lauer

I love being creative and working with creative people.

My Approach

I distinctly remember feeling like I had two paths before me: opera or law. I decided to lean in and embrace the (perhaps unconventional) overlap between them. Surprisingly, there are more connections between the practice of law and the practice of music than most might think.

From my training as an opera singer, I learned the value of preparation and attention to detail. You need to put in the hours in the practice room and learn all the notes before rehearsal; if you don’t, you’re wasting everyone else’s time. I’m now able to bring these same skills – my unyielding work ethic and love of learning, a willingness to dig in and embrace new challenges, and my attention to detail – when counseling my clients or collaborating with my colleagues. My focus on intellectual property also affords me the opportunity to continue to engage with passionate, creative individuals. I love feeling like I can bring my whole self to work every day and that creativity and preparation are still the driving forces behind my legal career.

Outside of work, music is still a big part of my life. I play piano and guitar and occasionally compose. I also enjoy working out (yoga and weightlifting are my favorites), and I love to read. I try to solve any thriller or mystery I read before the actual reveal.
