Three Winthrop & Weinstine Lawyers Named Minnesota “Attorneys of the Year”
Minneapolis, MN — December 10, 2013. Winthrop & Weinstine is pleased to announce that three of its attorneys have been selected as 2013 “Attorneys of the Year” by Minnesota Lawyer. Stephen R. Baird, David A. Davenport and Devan V. Padmanabhan have joined the select group of attorneys throughout the state who have distinguished themselves through exemplary work.

In addition, Minnesota Lawyer will present the Circle of Excellence award, which honors those who have been Attorneys of the Year multiple times, to Stephen Baird, who was previously named as an “Attorney of the Year” in 2011.

Honorees were chosen based the following criteria: procuring a successful result in an important case or business transaction, leadership in professional associations, participation in newsworthy events in the legal community, or by performing significant public services or in-house legal services.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Steve, Dave and Devan,” said Scott Dongoske, firm president. “They are outstanding contributors to our firm and our legal community, and we are glad to count them among our colleagues and friends.”

This year’s honorees will be featured in a special section in Minnesota Lawyer on February 24, 2014, and during an awards dinner on February 20, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Minneapolis.

Stephen R. Baird heads the Intellectual Property and Trademark and Brand Management practice groups, and counsels clients on trademark law, related unfair competition law and copyright law, as well as branding strategies and Internet domain issues. He also handles trademark litigation matters, and manages both large and small U.S. and international trademark portfolios for a wide variety of companies. Mr. Baird is also the founder and lead author of the nationally recognized IP and branding law blog, DuetsBlog.

David A. Davenport’s complex litigation experience spans a variety of litigation matters, ranging from multimillion-dollar IP cases; to violations of high-stakes, non-competition agreements; to theft of valuable trade secrets; to real estate, finance and banking disputes; to shareholder disputes. Recently, Mr. Davenport successfully secured a $10 million arbitration award in an extremely complicated wrongful termination and defamation case, which, in addition to restoring to Mr. Davenport’s client his good name, has resulted in what may be the largest award in a defamation case.

Devan V. Padmanabhan is a patent litigator whose experience includes a wide range of technologies and industries, and crosses all intellectual property areas, including patent, copyright, unfair competition, trademark, and technology-based cases. In the recently decided copyright case of American Institute of Physics and John Wiley & Sons, Inc. v. Schwegman, Lundberg & Woessner, P.A., through the verdict that the use of journal articles as support in the prosecution of a patent constitutes fair use, Mr. Padmanabhan’s achievement for the defendants did nothing less than ensure that the U.S. patent system can continue to operate in an economically feasible way.
