I really like the size of the law firm; it's big enough to have some truly qualified attorneys in the areas I need, but not so large to have a high degree of infrastructure that adds costs without value.

2013 Midwest IP Institute
Intellectual Property attorneys Stephen R. Baird and Devan V. Padmanabhan both presented at the 2013 Midwest IP Institute, held September 26-27, 2013, in Minneapolis, MN.

Steve spoke September 26, 2013, on "The Year in Trademark Law: Time Machines, Red Shoes and the Ale House Blues," an analysis on the practical implications of the past year’s ten most significant trademark decisions; including issues as wide-ranging as the distinctiveness of single-color marks, initial interest confusion and restaurant trade dress to procedural issues such as claim preclusion. He also provided an update on generic top level domain applications.

On September 27, 2013, Devan moderated "Shakedown Street: The Rise of Mass Copyright Infringement Claims," a panel discussion of the current status of these and other emerging cases, and analyzed the strengths and weakness of the claims.  The panel also highlighted claims of infringement based on law firms' compliance with the duty to disclose prior art non-patent literature to the Patent Office.
