I really like the size of the law firm; it's big enough to have some truly qualified attorneys in the areas I need, but not so large to have a high degree of infrastructure that adds costs without value.

Winthrop & Weinstine Expands IP Department, Adds New Patent Attorney to Form "Patent Boutique"

Leading Minnesota Patent Attorney
Jeffrey R. Stone Joins Firm

Minneapolis, MN – October 28, 2011. Jeffrey R. Stone has joined Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A., as a shareholder in the firm’s Intellectual Property department. He will chair the firm’s new patent law and patent prosecution group “boutique.”

Jeff’s extensive legal experience covers all things patent, including but not limited to patent prosecution, patentability opinions, litigation, licensing, and strategic client counseling. He has worked on patent-related matters in a wide range of fields, including medical technology and devices, precision agriculture, GPS guidance systems and radar surveillance systems.

He comes to the firm from IP Boutique Altera Law Group, LLC, where he served as Managing Partner. Before becoming an attorney, he worked in R&D and at a start-up medical device company. The breadth and depth of experience he gained along the way affords Jeff an intimate knowledge of the industries he practices in.

The new patent practice at Winthrop & Weinstine is a result of the firm’s desire to offer clients a full “package” of high quality intellectual property legal services. Jeff will lead a small team of experienced patent lawyers and paralegals, and grow the practice as the legal needs of new and current clients grow. He describes the new practice group as a “boutique” within a larger firm.

Firm president Scott Dongoske commented, “Jeff Stone’s connections and experience will afford us the ability to offer boutique-like patent work with the service and value that Winthrop & Weinstine is best known for.”

Steve Baird, Chair of the Intellectual Property Department, said “Jeff’s deep patent knowledge and his strong commitment to client service will complement the firm’s long-term strategy to build a full-service intellectual property department.”

Jeff received his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law and a B.S. from the University of North Dakota. He also received a M.P.H. in Public Health from the University of Minnesota.

In addition to himself, two patent attorneys and a paralegal will begin practicing in the group.
